Volkswagen camper vans usually come with stories involving extensive travel, adventures abroad, touring around festivals and ultimately, a restoration project and a new lease of life. The Split Screen Coffee Company is no exception with the owner and her VW camper van having experienced it all.
Originally from Canada, company founder Jennifer Walker decided to travel after college, arriving in England via New Zealand where she had developed a desire to own her own cafe. The many years spent roaming around the United Kingdom in the family bay-window camper van planted the idea of using a camper van as a mobile cafe.
The hunt for a suitable vehicle ultimately led to May, a 1965 Volkswagen camper van. May has her own travel stories having stated life in Wolfsburg, Germany as a bread delivery vehicle before becoming a family camper van in Poland. May arrived in England in 2005 and spent several years as a show car after being restored. She was converted to a mobile cafe in 2013.
The Split Screen Coffee Company, in the form of May, can usually be found at local events and festivals but can also be hired for weddings, parties and corporate events. A sample of the goodies on offer includes Pimms, Victoria sponge cake and sweets for the summer; spiced pumpkin soup and toffee apples in autumn; mulled wine, Baileys, coffee and minced pies for winter.
May also hasn’t forgotten her time as a show car having served up coffee at the Classic Car Boot Sale, an event run by Hemingway Design several times each year in London.

“Forget what you think you know about car boot sales. All traders are hand-picked by the Hemingway team and you will find some of the tastiest food around all served out of vintage vehicles. It is a real feast for the eyes and will have you translating each face for meaning and looking for hidden treasures amongst the classic cars and London brick.”
